RAIN, SUN OR SNOW, EXPRESS DELIVER WITH WINS

May 16, 2005

After a delayed start and a fourth inning rain delay, the Express walked away from the CVL contest against the St. Augusta Gussies with a 14-2 victory in St. Augusta this past Saturday.

Scott Marquardt led the Express offense as he hit a two-run homer in the third inning and a three run blast in the seventh. He finished the day 2-4 with five rbi and four runs scored. The Express hammered out 18 hits on the day. Joe Pennertz got things rolling in the first for the Express with his two run round tripper as Kimball took the early 2-0 and never looked back.

Pat Arnold (2-0) and Kris Hagen combined on a four hitter with Arnold picking up his second win of the season. Arnold (IP 5, K 6, BB 3, H 2, R 1, ER 1, HP 1) threw the first five innings and Hagen took over from there.

Mike Arnold and Aaron Knaus also had good days at the plate both going 3-6. Arnold hit two doubles and Knaus recorded one. Nate Turck went 3-5 with three singles and Brooks Marquardt was 2-4 with a triple and three runs scored.

Luxemburg

Sunday’s game in Luxemburg was more of the same for the Express as they continued to punish opponents pitching in route to a 11-5 win as they collected 14 hits on the day to improve their CVL record to 3-0 and man sole position of first place in the CVL South.

Joe Pennertz once again ignited the Express offense as he opened the game up with a two run double to put the Express ahead for good. Pennertz had a huge day at the plate (3-5, 3 2b, R, rbi’s 5). Kimball made it 6-0 before the Brewers tallied a single run in the sixth inning off starter Justin Hill (1-0).

Hill made his first appearance of the year going seven solid innings. Hill (IP 7, K 4, BB 2, H 9, R 3, ER 2) didn’t allow a base runner past second until the sixth inning. He was relieved by Joe Krippner to start the eighth inning and Brooks Marquardt came on for a 1-2-3 ninth to close the door on any hopes of a comeback for the Brew Crew.

Along with Pennertz, Scott Marquardt continued his sizzling efforts at the plate going 3-4 with a double, three runs scored and two rbi’s. Pat Arnold was 2-5 on the day with a triple. Mike Arnold was 2-4 with a double to round out the offensive highlights.

Rail Report

Kimball’s offense had a great weekend scoring 25 runs belting out 32 hits. Scott Marquardt hit his third and fourth homeruns for the season and went 5-8 scoring seven runs and driving in seven runs. He is 11-16 on the season batting .688.

Joe Pennertz is off to a fantastic start at the plate as well. Joe is hitting .412 with two homeruns on the season. This past weekend Pennertz went 4-8 with three doubles a homerun and 8 rbi’s. A great start for both of these guys.

This weekends wins give the Express sole possession of first place in the CVL South as the Cold Spring Rockies lost to the Watkins Clippers. Kimball is now 3-0 in CVL play and 4-0 overall.

Up Next

The Express will be in Dassel Wednesday night against the Saints. Kimball split with the Saints last year in non-league action. A 7:30 first pitch is slated.

Friday night the Express are back at again with the Watkins Clippers in Watkins. The Express came out on top 14-10 in the first meeting of the season in a slugfest win. The Clippers are coming off a big win against the Cold Spring Rockies. Since the Clippers lost to the Express in week two of their season, they have not lost.

Sunday at 2:00 the Pearl Lake Lakers of Marty invade Veterans Memorial Field as the two teams will do battle for the first time this season. Last year the two teams split the season series. The Lakers are off to a 0-3 start in the CVL, but should be getting all their college kids back and should start firing on all cylinders soon. Should be a great week of baseball.
