SAVVY VETERAN LEADS EXPRESS May 20, 2004 Manager Tom Marquardt’s two run single in the top of the ninth inning broke open a tie ball game and put the Express ahead for good as they used a three run ninth to pull away from the Class B Hutchinson Huskies in amateur baseball action on a humid May evening Wednesday in Hutchinson. Manager Tom Marquardt inserted himself in the lineup to lead off the top of the eighth inning with the Express down 6-5. Marquardt singled to right field to start the rally. He was driven in later in the inning as his son Brooks Marquardt singled to tie the game up. Tom finished the night 2-2 with two rbi and a run scored. In the top of the ninth Tom struck again as he batted with one out and the bases loaded. He singled to right field to score two giving the Express the lead for good. Joe Krippner came on in relief of Kris Hagen in the ninth to pick up the win. Mike Arnold scored the winning run in the ninth after hitting his second double of the night. Arnold finished 3-4 2 2b, 3R, 2 rbi. The win improves the Express record to 5-2 overall. They play next at Cold Spring against the Rockies in a game that has been moved to 6:00.
