EXPRESS WIN IN TEN; LOSE IN THE RAIN

June 4, 2006

On a beautiful day for baseball this past Sunday afternoon the Kimball Express traveled to St. Augusta to take on the Gussies in Central Valley League play and came away with a 15-10 wild win in ten innings.

The Express had this game in their pocket. After six innings they were up 10-3 and were cruising. Starting pitcher Pat Arnold came out of the game and all the Express had to do was get nine more outs and the game should be over.

That’s why they play all nine innings.  In the seventh inning St. Augusta’s Rick Clubb hit a grand slam homerun off reliever Adam Beyer to cut the lead to 10-7 Express. In the eighth inning Aaron Bengston hit a three run blast for the Gussies to tie the game.

The game ended up going ten innings as neither team scored in the ninth. The top of the tenth the Express scored five runs to walk away again from the Gussies and Jim Brubaker who was on in relief of Adam Beyer picked up the win.

Offensively for the Express Adam Beyer had a two run homerun in the tenth inning and finished the day 2-6. Scott Marquardt and Jim Brubaker were both 3-6 on the day with two doubles a piece and Pat Arnold was 3-4 with a double.

Litchfield

Last Wednesday evening the Express were in Litchfield taking on the Blues in non-league play. The Blues came away with a 10-6 victory in a game that was cut short due to rain.

Scott Marquardt started on the mound going five innings before Joe Krippner came on in relief to start the sixth. Joe was relieved by Adam Beyer in the same inning. Krippner takes the loss.

After five innings the Express were up 6-5 before the Blues scored four runs in the sixth inning. They tallied on one more in the seventh inning to make it 10-6. The Express scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning on a homerun by Brubaker and a double by Scott Marquardt. But all was for not as the game was called due to rain before the inning was completed. So the game goes back to the last completed inning which was the seventh inning.

Rail Report

After this weekends games the Express record overall is now 8-4 and 5-1 in CVL play. Coming up this weekend for the Express they are home Saturday against the Lonsdale Aces for two seven inning games and on Sunday they host the Eden Valley Hawks in CVL play at 2:00.

Brooks Marquardt got an MRI on his hand this past week as it was not healing and found out he has a broken bone. He is getting a plate put in his hand this week and according to the doctors should be ready to play by the end of June.

The Express would like to welcome the latest addition to the team as freshman Bobby Arens joins the team. He got to see his first action of the year in Sunday’s 15-10 victory as he was a pinch runner in the tenth inning and scored on Adam Beyers homerun.
