MARQUARDT, ARNOLD LIFT EXPRESS

June 19, 2007

Mike Arnold’s eighth inning solo blast tied the game at two a piece and Scott Marquardt’s ninth inning single scored his brother Brooks Marquardt to win the Saturday afternoon amateur baseball non-league contest with the Lake Henry Lakers in Kimball at Veterans Memorial Field.

It was the only game of the week for the Express as Sunday’s contest with the St. Nicholas Nicks was cancelled due to a Little League tournament being played in St. Nicholas. So the Express didn’t want to lose and have to wait an entire week to try and redeem themselves.

Kimball jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before Lake Henry tied it up in the middle innings. The Lakers then took the lead in the top of the eighth inning as reliever Brett Thompson came on in relief of starter Brooks Marquardt. Brett had some unlucky hops in the infield and gave up a couple hits and it was 2-1 in the blink of an eye.

In the bottom of the eighth inning Mike Arnold connected for a solo blast to left centerfield to tie the game and 2-2. Thompson took care of business on the mound in the top of the ninth to set the stage for the Express offense in the bottom of the inning.

Brooks Marquardt led off with a line drive double down the right field line as he went with an outside pitch. Pat Arnold then walked and Scott Marquardt belted a ball into the gap in right centerfield to plate Brooks for the game winning run.

Thompson picked up the win in relief. Brooks Marquardt went seven solid innings for his first start of the season.
