EIGHT RUN 5TH INNING SINKS LAKERS
July 19, 2005
On a hot breezy Sunday at Veterans Memorial Field the
Express won round one of the CVL playoffs as they exploded for a eight run
fifth inning to beat the Pearl Lake Lakers of Marty 9-1.
Brooks Marquardt started for the Express and went eight
very solid innings striking out seven. He didn’t allow a hit after the
second inning to pick up the win and propel the Express into round two, as
they will face the Cold Spring Rockies next Sunday in Kimball at 2:00.
The Express broke open a 1-1 ball game in the fifth
inning as Mike Arnold got things rolling with a two run homerun. Scott
Marquardt followed that up with a three run moon ball and Pat Arnold capped
off the eight run fifth inning with a three run blast himself to give the
Express a 9-1 advantage.
Mike Arnold was 3-3 on the day with three rbi to lead
the Express offense.
Hutchinson
Kris Hagen pitched eight great innings this past
Wednesday night to pick up his sixth win of the season leading the Express
over the Hutchinson Huskies 5-0.
Hagen
has pitched 15 straight scoreless innings in his last two starts. He has not
allowed a run in his two wins against St. Nick and Hutchinson.
Brooks
Marquardt was 2-5 on the night with a two run homerun in the eighth inning
to lead the Express offense.
Rail Report
The Express are now 17-7 overall and 1-0 in CVL South
playoff action. They play the Cold Spring Rockies in Kimball next Sunday at
2:00 with a Region 11C berth on the line. The loser will play the winner of
the Pearl Lake Luxemburg game to decide who the second team out of the CVL
South will be to advance. The loser of the
Pearl
Lake
, Lux game will be eliminated from play.
In the CVL North playoffs the Watkins Clippers and Eden
Valley Hawks were both victorious and will spar off next Sunday in Watkins
with the winner qualifying for region play. St. Nick and St. Augusta will
play in the elimination game next Sunday in St. Augusta.
The Express and the Rockies split the season series
with Kimball winning game one 4-3 and the
Rockies
smoking the Express 9-0 in the second game. Sunday’s match up should be a
great one as Cold Spring eliminated the Express from region play last season
and will be looking to knock off the top seeded Express again.
